3. MFA Admin - Fri 18/May/2007, 11:28am
Dear Mr. Anson, First and foremost, we would like to thank you for registering your interest in franchise business. As you already knew, Old Town Kopitiam is not a member of our association and they are yet to register with Registrar of Franchise (RoF). We don't have any information about them. As a franchise is still new to you, we would advise for you to equip yourself with the franchise knowledge before entering to franchise business. We have a series of training programs such as Basic Franchising Course. You can meet up with the industry experts during the training. Kindly check our latest updates on franchise related programs. You can just register online in order for you to participate in our training programs.
Thank you and regards.

hi all, on what i understand old town is not register as franchise company, but this management is smart enough they introduce as a partnership business .. is a totally different of franchise program. What does mean partnership?, you invest a shop and place but there is some percentage have to go back to owner.
20. Razeef - Wed 12/Mar/2008, 12:46pm
hello all, i just found out that almost all of the kopitiam business in malaysia is a license business. Meaning they DO NOT come under the FRANCHISE ACT.
Each interested person gets a different deal everytime. Contract does not apply for 5 years minimum. (for example) halim can get 2 year deal, ali can get 3.

Hi All, if you mean old town is having their own business plan and they did not register with Registrar of Franchise (RoF). They can have their own plan to sell on and no need to register anything?

is old town a franchise or license? they claim as license but operate as franchise, are they selling a disguise franchise? is this against the law? are Old Town doing this because licensing is cheaper and has lesser regulations than franchising?

I have done research on most Kopitiam in Malaysia. There are only 2 main players Old Town (OT) and PapaRich (PR). Most of the outlets of these 2 are in near proximity of each other. Last i heard on OT fee is RM$400K and exclusive to insiders now. PR would require RM$300K. I further research on locations, menus, pricing, demographic on some of the outlets. Interesting facts on both. I have even gone to the stage of researching the planting, roasting and making of coffee process. There are lots more to understand before jumping into having a franchise. Anyway, after all the research, i am convinced and already started to have some interest from investors to go in BIG. No franchise fee, all investors own their store, we do the setup, training, purchasing etc. One brand, one big bang.
