Job Interview in English & Life Experience

Finally my worst fear come true. The job interview next week is in english (whaddoyouexpect..). And the title i am vying for is the ''Floor Manager'' of a 5 star hotel in KL, which jobscope includes the banquet/dining hall, the conference hall and the reception hall.

Actually i'm almost 30 in a couple of years and many high school buddies of mine already have nice and stable jobs after climbing the ''corporate ladder'' for 5-10 years.

One of them started with just a ''laughable'' culinary certificate 10 years ago (after failing to get into even the lowliest IPTA matrix program).. and worst still, it wasn't even recognised by any quality control education organisations in Malaysia.

Since i got grade 1 in SPM (albeit the weak one.. but still grade 1 nonetheless ... hehe..), i never thought those with 2nd, 3rd grade and ''dropouts'' could get anywhere close...

However, time flies extremely fast. those ''laughable'' friend of mine whom i haven't met for almost 10 years, suddenly appeared in facebook with a very enviable sport car strategically positioned in the background huhuhu.... (is it nissan fairlady or what....)

After finishing the culinary certificate, he quickly took a diploma and 2 years after working as an ''executive assistant'' which again we all laughed (now i regret...), he suddenly got an offer from UKM for an executive degree. after 4 years of night/weekend studies, he finally became a graduate and guess what... he is now working in a very BIG TELECOMMUNICATION company as a senior manager with rm10k+ monthly (salary + bonus + shares/stock) EVERY bloody YEAR!!!!!!

We met in a very high class 5 star hotel lobby (Hotel Royale Chulan in Jalan Conlay near KLCC) in KL where he treated all of us old buddies with ridiculously expensive coffees and cakes (coffee rm 18+ each and a slice of cake a whopping rm15+ each)..

i felt soooo embarassed (gobsmacked is the better word... huhu..) ... i almost choked while sipping the coffee... considering the most i made a month is rm800 for a night job flipping burgers plus extra rm500 helping friends in various pasar malam.. and the GRAND TOTAL was a paltry rm1300 a month...

God what have i done in the last 10 years... i really could not believe it...

hence.. i braved myself scouring the Star classified/vacancies and the best i could try with my qualification is the Floor Manager position... with rm2,600 salary working 6.30am to 8pm including saturday... huhu...

heck... i have to start somewhere... and i REALLY want to get a job with rm10k+ a month...

=====

p/s - am actually very interested to comment on the English Mastery thingy... and i definitely will write about how i learnt english and become fluent myself... (i felt quite proud about it considering my humble kampung & ''mandi sungai'' & ''menjerat burung wak-wak dalam paya'' origin...) . i know my grammar is a mess sometime... but i could talk to english foreigners/tourist quite nicely ...

but i just couldn't think properly now...

i have both a deep respect interweaved with a fuck-you-bastard attitude toward my ''successful'' friend somehow ...

I will teach him one day... like Arnold Schwarzenegger said...

''I'll BE BACCCK!!''

I thought so, mr Linkman respond in English would be superior in its class. Perhaps we are about to see more incoming comments here especially from mr Linkman majalah followers, ha ha. I treated you like VIP, mr Linkman, don't you? Although you are about to attend an interview for 2.6k a month job. Your friend who earned 10k month is actually nothing to proud about, he is still a fix wage earner from an employer. Even, if he has 30k monthly salary, he still could'nt buy a bungalow in section 14 PJ. The only way to give a strike back, is to become an entrepreneur of real business, not like rich quick minded of express entrepreneur like Megaherbs Bio-Xtreme, dr.zubir company who has been charged of investment scam and misconduct lately, pending court hearings. BTW, it's good for you to set a target to over-whelm your 10k salary fren but whatever job you do, dont let the entrepreneurial spirit flies away. The ambition towards becoming an entrepreneur has to start while we are in early 30's-40's, if you reach 60, then just thinking of starting a business, trust me, just in 5 years all the hard-earned EPF savings will turn into someone else wealth because as at this time our business making decision is not as efficient and proactive like 20 years before. Talking about real business, what kind of business to begin with will determine the success of long journey to come. Besides sufficient capital, ambitious towards running the business you loved about is not enough if the end product/services are not easy to sell of to make profit. This is where the planning takes place, if want to run good profitable business, you must sell a product which a customer will need it. Its better to sell product which end-users will consume it everyday, the easiest to think about is selling nasi lemak or burger, hawkers's style. What if we think deeper, how about selling the input needed by those hawkers directly? this is where the challenge begins, the hawkers now become our potential customer, will ask about the price you can offer to him/her, cheaper from current supplier? how you can meet the demand? do you produce the "input product" yourself? and more... to be continued...
